About Ms. Ellis
My name is Jackie Ellis and this will be my 25th year teaching! Over twenty of those have been in kindergarten. I have been at Clark Elementary since it opened in 1998. I have one son that is 20 and a daughter who is 17. I was born in New York but moved to North Miami Beach when I was 10 years old. I graduated from University of South Florida in 1979. I then taught 2nd, 3rd and kindergarten in Atlanta. I moved to Orlando in 1982 and taught kindergarten. I then moved back to Tampa in 1990 and taught at Philip Shore and Hunter's Green before coming to Clark Elementary. I enjoy horseback riding and traveling when I have the time (and money!). I teach kindergarten because I love it. I don’t have any young ones at home with me anymore so I look forward to spending time with your child! Five year olds are very special and I hope to give your child a wonderful year to remember.

Preparing for the First Day of School
1. Your child will need to bring in some supplies. Some of you already have the supply list; if not it will be posted on here shortly. You may get a head start and bring these items in during our Meet and Greet on August 22nd. Please label the items with your child's name. If you would like to take to donate more items to our classroom please feel free to check out our Wish List on this website. Thank you for all of your help.
2. I understand that first grade is an important and exciting time in your child's life. The first few weeks of school are very crucial to shaping our classroom culture. Your child is going to learn how to be responsible and independent. This is the reason that there are to be no parents accompanying their child into our classroom when they arrive at school. The same goes for at the end of the day when parents are to pick up their children at the sunshine.
3. There are some things you can have your child practice to help them prepare for first grade. These things are:
- Identify and write the letters of the alphabet (upper and lowercase).
- Identify and write numbers 1-10.
- Know the following colors: red, yellow, orange, blue, green, purple, pink, brown , black, and white.
- Know the following shapes: circle, square, triangle, and rectangle.
- Write his or her full name, first and last, using uppercase letters at the beginning only.
- Know their birthday- month and year.
- Recognize their name.
- Know their address (house number, street, city, state, and country.)
- Know their phone number.
4. Review with your child our class behavior plan and the consequences. It will benefit our class greatly if you observe the plan at home as well.

All About Ms. Florence
Click here to learn all about your teacher!
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Welcome to Room 78! My name is Ms. Florence and I am very excited to be your child’s teacher for this school year. I know that we are going to have a positive and successful school year together. We have many exciting and important things to learn in the first grade. This letter will give you a chance to learn more information about myself and our classroom.
I attended college at Buffalo State University in Buffalo, New York. I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Instruction and my Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I have a New York State teaching license as well as a Nevada State teaching license. This is my third year teaching in the Clark County District. Prior to this year, I was a third grade teacher. Teaching children is something that I have wanted to do since I was in the second grade. My goal is to prepare your child for his or her future. I would like each child in my class to succeed to their highest learning ability.
It is easier for a child to learn when he or she can relate to the topics that they are learning about. I would like to get to know each one of my students as an individual so I can plan my lesson plans accordingly. Attached is a student information sheet. I would really like to learn more about your child from you. Please take a few minutes and fill it out and return it to me as soon as possible.
Parent Involvement is an important part of a classroom. I encourage and support parent involvement in our classroom. I will send home a volunteer sheet for you to read on the first day of school. Please take the time to complete it and send it back to school with your child. I will then schedule a meeting for all of the volunteers and myself to discuss procedures and guidelines.
If you have any comments or concerns feel free to call me at 799-6600 or email me at mflorence@interact.ccsd.net
Sincerely,
Ms. Florence

Homework
Learn all about homework here.
Homework will be assigned in first grade. The main purpose of homework is to reinforce skills your child learned at school. A homework packet will be sent home each Monday and it needs to be completed and returned by Friday morning. Homework should not take any longer than 15 minutes each night. If your child is consistently spending more than 15 mins on their homework, please let me know. We will need to sit down and figure out what we can do to help. I do not want to see anyone getting frustrated.
Reading- Please encourage your child to read. The more practice your child receives, the more skilled he or she will become. Your child will need to read for atleast 20 mins each evening.
Math- Each child will need to memorize their basic addition and subtraction facts. Please work with flashcards to help your child. Math homework will be sent home nightly for review.
Spelling- A spelling test will be given every Friday. They will consist of word patterns and high frequency words. A word list will be sent home every Monday in our Bee Binder. It will be located in our class newsletter. Please help your child practice these words daily.
Some ways parents can help their child with homework are:
Have a specific time each day to complete homework. Make sure it is in a quiet, comfortable, well-lit place. Make sure there are no distractions (music playing, TV blaring). Help your child, but do not do their homework for them.
