Trinity's Art Classes
This week the students have been learning about the work of Louisiana artist George Rodrique, creator of the famous "Blue Dog" paintings, and painting their own version of the dog. Both stairwells and the bulletin board outside the school office have been updated with the "blue dogs". Be sure to check them out!

Grade 3/4 in Room 301
Fit for Life on Thursday, March 11, 2010. Remember your lunch and come to the classroom first thing in the morning.
Parents, if you want to contact Ms. Folks, please send an email to slfolks@cbe.ab.ca . I prefer email as it is difficult for me to have a conversation during class time. Thank-you for your understanding.
Friday is Library Day - please remember to bring in your Langevin library books so you can sign out new ones!
This week in Room 301
Friday, Feb 26th, 2010
We did a different kind of test this week. Instead of writing about simple machines, we designed and built working models of a compound machine that used at least 3 simple machines. Once we finished building and test our machines, we showed Ms Folks and explained to her how it worked.
In our inquiry projects, we are starting to apply some of the knowledge we have learned in our research. Some of us are building models to show what we have been studying, while others are creating pictures and stories.

Introduction
Italy – it’s in Europe, but what else do you know about it? What about it’s history, the different cities, places to visit, food, fun, and transportation?
This webquest is designed to help you discover Italy. You will use the Internet to learn about Italy and to help you create a Power Point Presentation or a Travel brochure that will show what you learned.

Welcome
"My trip to Italy" Webquest
Evaluation
You will be graded on the following rubric.
Teacher Evaluation of WebQuest
(based on rubric concept by Bernie Dodge)
| | Beginning (0) | Developing (2) | Accomplished (4) | Score |
| Overall Aesthetics |
| Overall Visual Appeal | Few or no graphics. No variation in layout or typography. No color interest. Background interferes with the readability. | Some graphic elements but not always. Graphics contribute to understanding of concepts, ideas and relationships. Some variation in type size, color, and layout. | Graphic elements are appropriate. Visual connections that contribute to understanding of concepts, ideas and relationships. Type size and/or color are used well and consistently. | |
| Navigation & Flow | Getting through the lesson is confusing and unconventional. Pages can't be found easily and/or the way back isn't clear. | Few places where the learner can get lost and not know where to go next. | Navigation is seamless. It is always clear to the learner what all the pieces are and how to get to them. | |
| Mechanical Aspects | More than 5 broken links, misplaced or missing images, badly sized tables, misspellings and/or grammatical errors. | Some broken links, misplaced or missing images, badly sized tables, misspellings and/or grammatical errors. | No mechanical problems noted. | |
| Introduction |
| Motivational Effectiveness | Purely factual, with no appeal to relevance or social importance. Scenario posed is transparently phony. Does not motivate learner. | Relates somewhat to the learner's interests and/or describes a compelling question or problem. | Draws reader into the lesson by relating to the learner's interests or goals. Engages the learner by offering compelling questions/problems. | |
| Cognitive Effectiveness | Does not prepare the reader for what is to come, or build on what the learner already knows. | Makes some reference to learner's prior knowledge and to some extent what the lesson is about. | Builds on learner's prior knowledge and effectively prepares the learner by foreshadowing what the lesson is about. | |
| Task |
| Connection to Standards | The task is not related to standards. | Referenced to standards but is not clearly connected to what students must know and be able to do to achieve said standards | Referenced to standards and is clearly connected to what students must know and be able to do to achieve proficiency of those standards. | |
| Cognitive Level | Task requires simply comprehending or retelling of information found on web pages and answering factual questions. | Is doable but is limited to relevance in student’s life. | Is doable and engaging, and elicits thinking that goes beyond rote comprehension. | |
| Process |
| Clarity | Process is not clearly stated. Students would not know exactly what they were supposed to do just from reading this. | Some directions are given, but there is missing information. Students might be confused. | Every step is clearly stated. Most students would know exactly where they are at each step of the process and know what to do next. | |
| Scaffolding | The process lacks strategies and organizational tools. Activities are of little significance to one another. | Strategies and organizational tools are inadequate to ensure that all students will gain the knowledge needed to complete the task. Some activities do not relate specifically to the accomplishment of the task. | Activities are clearly related and designed to take the students from basic knowledge to higher level thinking. | |
| Richness | Few steps, no separate roles assigned. | Some separate tasks or roles assigned. More complex activities required. | Different roles are assigned to help students understand different perspectives; shared responsibilities. | |
| Resources |
| Relevance & Quantity | Resources provided are not sufficient for students to accomplish the task. Or there are too many resources. | There is some connection between the resources and the information needed for students to accomplish the task. Some resources don't add anything new. | There is a clear and meaningful connection between all the resources and the information needed for students to accomplish the task. | |
| Quality | Links are ordinary. They lead to information that could be found in a classroom encyclopedia. | Some links carry information not ordinarily found in a classroom. | Links make excellent use of the Web's quality resources. Variety of resources help students think critically. | |
| Evaluation |
| Clarity of Criteria | Criteria for success are not described. | Criteria for success are at least partially described. | Criteria for success are clearly stated in the form of a rubric. Evaluation instrument clearly measures what students must know and be able to do to accomplish the task. | |
| TOTAL SCORE | |
Introduction
Technology, technology, technology! It's all around us. Our students seemed "plugged-in" to it. They are more engaged when it is used as a tool for learning.
Today's professional development is designed to help you investigate Smart Boards and their effective use within the classroom. You will learn what Smart Boards are, what they can do and how they can be integrated into your curriculum. When you leave today you will have created a meaningful lesson plan that incorporates the Smart Board for use in your classroom.

Dear eighth grade Bible parents, October 29, 2009
In trying to make Bible class practical rather than academically driven, I’m making a few changes on how we will be approaching our grading system. As we discuss the lesson in class during the week, the students will be taking notes. The students will be evaluated by taking their tests with an open book. If they pay attention and take notes, they should do well. For the weekly verses and memorization of the Bible books, I am asking for your assistance. I would like for the students to recite them to you. For record keeping, please sign the test paper acknowledging that your child has memorized the verses and the books of the Bible and has repeated it to you. I’m hoping that the change of focus on grades will eliminate the memorizing-Bible-knowledge-for-a-grade attitude and they can focus on enjoying Bible because they want to know more about God. I’m praying that this will help students internalize and accept Biblical principles because they see that it is real, especially when it opens up conversation with you as parents.
As a reminder, the typed testimonies are due every Tuesday. Please refer to the website for the criteria. Again, please use this time to discuss with your child how faithful God is and/or how God can use them as a testimony to the world. The schedule for the week will be as the following: Monday – discuss verbal testimonies, collect chapter tests. Tuesday thru Thursday – discuss lesson. Friday – practical application.
Reminder: take home test is open book. Verses and books of the Bible is to be recited to the parents. Parents, please sign the take home chapter test indicating that your child recited the verses and the books of the Bible to you.
